Netflix brings Breaking Bad in 4K

If you haven't yet started watching Breaking Bad (or you like it enough to watch it a second time around), Netflix has launched the series in Ultra HD (4K) resolution. All 62 of the episodes are available in the higher-resolution, obviously limited to those with applicable 4K-resolution Smart TVs.

The episodes were remastered by Sony Pictures Entertainment from the original film negatives, according to Netflix, ensuring true 4k quality rather than the degradation of up-sampling Full HD videos. Breaking Bad isn't the only 4k offering the streaming service has introduced, however.

In addition, Netflix says it has also included Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2, and Smurfs 2 in Ultra HD resolution, joining the higher-resolution House of Cards season and Moving Art documentaries. These movies were also remastered by Sony Pictures.

The service went into a bit of details about this on its Tech Blog yesterday, saying Netflix and Sony struck a deal for Interoperable Master Format (IMF) for Breaking Bad. IMF holds the promise of improved accuracy, scale, and efficiency, according to the company.
