Neon Genesis Evangelion on Netflix, new movie preview on July 6th

Today we're taking a peek at the just-re-released Neon Genesis Evangelion, just re-released and available legally for the first time since the 2005 DVD collection. Netflix first announced their ties with Evangelion in March of 2019, and the series first premiered on Netflix on June 21st, 2019. But why should an average, everyday viewer care about this series from the 1990s?

This anime series has been the subject of some debate, political, personal, and international since inception. The series became so important to viewers during its relatively short run on television that the show's creator received death threats from angry viewers of the final two episodes – which ended up being the subject of movies which showed alternate endings to the series thereafter.

In addition to the re-release of the series on Netflix, streaming to such a large international audience now for the first time ever, Evangelion will be the subject of another new, major motion picture in the year 2020. News from the creators of this film, the folks at Toei, announced today that they'll be showing the first 10 minutes and 40 seconds of the new Studio Khara film in advance of the film's in-theater release.

The film will be called Shin Evangelion Gekijō-ban :||, or シン・エヴァンゲリオン劇場版, will have a preview showing on July 6th, 2019. This showing will occur during the Japan Expo in Paris, and this preview will have its own title. The preview goes by the name "Shin Evangelion Gekijōban AVANT 1 (Beginning 10 Minutes 40 Seconds 00 Frame) 0706 Version."

There'll also be an Anime Expo at the same time in Los Angeles as well as Shanghai and at a set of locations inside Japan, also on July 6th. Before that time, July 1st, Toei will release an app called EVA-EXTRA for both Android and iOS.

Netflix is currently streaming three Evangelion titles, including the Neon Genesis Evangelion series and two films (essentially alternate endings to the show). Those movies are Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth and Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion.
