Motorola may make these major changes in 2019
The year 2019 might well contain more than one watershed moment for Motorola under Lenovo. Sources today say that Motorola will likely remove several smartphone lines from their lineup while they expand one: Moto G. If all goes as planned, the release of the Moto G7 in 2019 will remind us of the launch of the original Moto G all the way back in the year 2013.
The original Moto G launched at a time when smartphones were released with rather scattershot strategies. Many companies released many phones, hoping that they'd have a hit if they just released every different sort of phone with every different set of specs. Motorola seemed to hit the right spot with the original Moto G: It wasn't anything flashy. Instead, it was just good enough for a price that was shockingly low.
Back in 2013, the original Moto G cost $180 in its least expensive iteration. For what it delivered, that price was spot-on. In a market where the average phone was approximately $600 USD, one could purchase three Moto G phones for every higher-end phone. Imagine if that were true today!
But wait, you might be saying, isn't that still true of some phones today? Actually yes, and the difference between lowest-end and highest-end phones is even more massive. Take for instance the Poco F1. This is a more-than-capable midrange phone (not even the least expensive smartphone) that costs around $340 USD. The average high-end smartphone now costs over $1000!
There's a chance Motorola might take a stab at disrupting the world of midrange phones with a line of Moto G smartphones in 2019. There's little doubt they'll release another Moto G at all, but picture this: "Lenovo may have cut the Moto C, M, & X lines this year, but next year is going to see a record number of Moto G models: Standard, Play, Plus, and Power," said Evleaks on Twitter.
The current Moto G line costs anywhere from $130 to $350. The lowest-end price there includes the relatively out-of-date Moto G4, which Motorola still sells in their online store for some unfathomable reason. Strewn through the rest of the store are the Moto G5 Plus, Moto G5S Plus, Moto G6 Play, and the straight up ol' Moto G6.
In 2019 we could well see Motorola push all their marketing power toward two lines: Moto G and Moto Z. Moto G takes the lower and mid-range tiers, and Moto Z keeps the high. Leaked specs for the Moto G7 appeared today suggesting the device would sport a 6.4-inch Full HD+ display, 2x camera on its back, 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage, fingerprint reader, 12MP camera up front, 3500mAh battery inside, and Android 9 Pie.
