Microsoft confirms Sunrise acquisition

Earlier this month rumor surfaced that Microsoft had acquired the calendar app Sunrise, something the company has confirmed on its blog today. Says Microsoft, it decided to acquire the app because it thinks "a reinvention in the way people use calendars" on their handsets is needed, and with Sunrise it aims to increase productivity options for mobile users. This follows the company's Acompli acquisition. The terms of the deal weren't revealed, but Microsoft does say it'll be bringing in the Sunrise team.

Sunrise is a fairly robust calendar app available to Android and iOS users, trumping many competitors by supporting third-party apps and other calendar apps, and linking to things like Facebook to ensure all of your events are in one place. The app enjoys a solid user base.

Microsoft says its will keep the Sunrise app available in the respective app stores for free, but it has stayed quiet on what it plans to do with the service. According to a statement posted on Sunrise's website, the team will transition to Microsoft where it'll expand its own team, and where it will "build the best" time management product, which doesn't reveal much.

Microsoft has made it clear that mobile productivity is receiving a strong focus from the company, something that is dicussed at length in the video above with both Sunrise and Acompli's CEOs.
