Mercedes-AMG 53-series CLS, E-Class Coupe and Cabrio debut

Mercedes has pulled the wraps off three new AMG models that slot into the AMG 53-series. The new models include the AMG 53 CLS, AMG 53 E-Class Coupe, and the AMG 53 E-Class Cabriolet. All three of these new AMD models run the same inline six under the hood.

That engine is an electrified unit with twin-turbos making 435hp and about 383 lb-ft of torque. The electrified portion of the engine is an EQ Boost starter-alternator that can momentarily give 16 kW (22hp) of output and another 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. The transmission mated to that engine is an AMD SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G and all versions have an AMD tweaked 4MATIC+ AWD system.

That electric auxiliary EQ Boost system helps to minimize turbo lag. The car has a 48V electric system that Mercedes says paves the way for further hybridization in the future. The 48V system makes more power and needs thinner wiring that is lighter. The cars all have a special front apron with a splitter in silver chrome.

The rear of the car has special AMG touches with two-section trail lights. The CLS 53 comes with 19-inch alloy wheels with 20-inch wheels as an option. Inside the cars, all get a 12.3-inch screen. The cars can be fitted with an optional Widescreen Cockpit with a large display and virtual instruments in the field of view for the driver.

Steering wheels have touch-sensitive control buttons that respond to swipe gestures for controlling the infotainment system. Infotainment can also be controlled with voice commands. The AMG models have AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension that uses air chambers with sporty spring and damper setups to continuously adjust the suspension for comfort and performance. Speed sensitive steering and a special fade-resistant compound braking system.

The AMG 53 CLS will hit 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds with the E-Series coupe slightly faster at 4.4-seconds. the E-Series cabrio needs 4.5 seconds to reach the same speed. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h for all models. Pricing is unannounced.
