Mazda MX-30 EV debuts at 2019 Tokyo Motor Show

Mazda has a new SUV that it is showing off at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show called the MX-30. The vehicle has four doors, but two of the doors are smaller and appear to open after the front doors are open like the smaller doors on a modern extended cab truck.Mazda says that the MX-30 team worked hard to create a cabin with an open feel. The console tray uses Heritage Cork to give texture and visual warmth. The door trim uses a fibrous material with a texture to give the cabin a sense of openness. Both of the materials are low-impact and sustainable.

The door trim also uses material made from recycled plastic bottles, and the cork is harvested from the bark of trees without cutting them down. MX-30 brings with it a new electric drive tech called e-Skyactiv. The car also uses G-Vectoring Control Plus. MX-30 has i-Activsense advanced safety technology with added Smart Brake support to help prevent collisions.

Tech used in the vehicle helps keep drivers on the road with curbs or discernable edges. Mazda also designed a structure to protect the battery in the event of an accident. The exterior of the vehicle looks similar to the other SUVs in the Mazda line. It has a squarer front end that looks different from other Mazda offerings.

The automaker says this is new ground for its Kodo design. The top of the MX-30 is a different color than the rest of the vehicle. Mazda will offer the frame top in Soul Red Crystal, Polymetal Gray, and Ceramic Metallic. Inside the car is a mixture of materials with different textures and colors. The MX-30 seen here is a left-hand drive car despite being shown in Tokyo, indicating it's meant for markets like North America despite the vehicle being a European spec model.
