Mate X delay tips even stranger phone with more screens

It's been a turbulent few months for foldable phones. Though Samsung and Huawei are both looking to try their hands are folding phones, both companies have delayed theirs at various points. Samsung, of course, delayed the Galaxy Fold after it became clear that it had some build quality issues, while Huawei delayed the Mate X to put it through additional testing in response to Samsung's own delay.

So, throughout the summer, we've been wondering which phone between the two would be the first one to hit shelves. It's looking like Samsung will be first out of the gate, as the company recently confirmed that the Galaxy Fold will launch sometime in September. The Mate X, however, likely won't be out until November.

This news comes from TechRadar, which reports on the latest delay for the Mate X. While the Mate X was originally scheduled to launch in September like the Galaxy Fold, Huawei apparently confirmed the delay at a press event at its headquarters in Shenzhen. We don't know why the Mate X has been delayed again, but given the delicate nature of these phones, it's probably safe to assume that it was delayed so Huawei can run more quality assurance testing on it.

TechRadar's report does say that Huawei still wants to have the Mate X out before the end of the year, particularly before the start of the holiday shopping season. That means November is the latest it would want to launch the phone, but of course, any number of issues could make further delays unavoidable.

Today's report also has an interesting morsel of information about a potential successor to the Mate X that has displays on the back as well. Though TechRadar's report says that Huawei might look to release the next Mate X as early as next year, it also notes that such a phone could still be years off. We'll see what happens from here, but for now at least, it looks like the Galaxy Fold is going to beat the Mate X to market.
