Massive 1,000ft spider web appeared overnight in Greece

A spider web spanning nearly 1,000ft has appeared in Greece, where locals say unusually high mosquito activity took place before the web appeared. This isn't an ordinary spider web, not even a very large one — it covers green landscape in a think blanket of webbing, giving a creepy wake-like appearance.READ: Spiders spiked with graphene weave ultra-strong webs

The spider web appeared in Aitoliko, a city in western Greece. Though it is huge, local reports indicate the web appeared essentially overnight, with locals awaking to a horrifying surprise. Such large nests appearing rapidly are rare, though not unheard of.

The web was created by Tetragnatha spiders, a type of spider that falls in the long-jawed orb weaver classification. Though those with phobias may find the sudden presence frightening, experts say these spiders aren't dangerous to humans and were likely just taking advantage of favorable mating conditions.

Temperatures in the region have been high, that joined by adequate humidity levels and a large number of mosquitos. The trio of conditions were quite ideal for the spiders, which made quick work of the shrubbery, transforming it into their own mating den.
