Marvel Comics Celebrate TRON Legacy
As we all sit with our fingernails embedded in our kneecaps watching the trailers for TRON Legacy, (I saw one in 3D before Alice in Wonderland a few months ago WOW,) it turns out that those in the best position to show their excitement are the folks over at Marvel Comics. To celebrate their brains melting down in wait for the epic black-plus-light sci-fi epic adventure, Marvel Comics will release variant covers of a whole stack of superhero comics. They're gonna be "TRON-ified" – their word!
For those of you who don't hang out in the comic book shop every Tuesday, lemme give you a little crash course in this particular situation. Marvel Comics is one of the largest comics labels in the world, marked most recently by their extremely successful dip into the film business. One of their tactics for upping sales on back issues and fuel the secondary market of comic collectors collecting rarities, they print "variant covers." All this means is that literally the front of the comic is different, and that's it.
Now Marvel comics doing this sort of special edition large-scale assault pumping up a movie can only mean one thing: there's a brand tie somewhere. Oh, wait, didn't Disney buy Marvel a while ago for $4 billion dollars? Yes they did! And isn't it Disney that owns the rights to the TRON movie (and now franchise?) Yes indeed!
