Magic Leap 1 AR headset revealed with $2300-$3k packages

Magic Leap was recently the subject of a report which put the company in some not-so-positive light, from the average consumer perspective. It's likely Magic Leap already had their announcements today planned well in advance, but the timing is notable. Today's Magic Leap announcements center on the Magic Leap Enterprise Suite, a package that'll cost $2995, and will include "everything a business needs to efficiently roll out spatial computing to employees."

This package includes the smart headset Magic Leap 1. This is a new version, or an "updated" version of Magic Leap One Creator Edition. This system works with applications that focus on "four core areas" for enterprise users. These core areas are: Communication, Collaboration and Co-presence; 3D Visualization; Learn and Assist; and Location-based Services.

The Magic Leap 1 headset is very, very similar to its predecessor. It still requires a hedset wired to a puck, and a physical controller. Specifications for the new Magic Leap 1 are as follows:

Magic Leap 1 (late-2019) Specs:

• NVIDIA Parker SOC, includes CPU: 2 Denver 2.0 64-bit cores + 4 ARM Cortex A57 64-bit cores (2 A57's and 1 Denver accessible to applications), and GPU: NVIDIA Pascal™, 256 CUDA cores, with Graphic APIs: OpenGL 4.5, Vulkan, OpenGL ES 3.1+AEP

• RAM: 8GB

• Internal Storage 128 GB (actual available storage capacity 95 GB)

• Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery – "Up to 3 hours continuous use"

• Audio Output: Onboard speakers and 3.5mm jack with audio spatialization processing

• Connectivity: Bluetooth 4.2, WiFi 802.11ac/b/g/n, USB-C

NOTE: It's important to take stock of the fact, here, that the specifications for the Magic Leap 1 revealed today match (item for item, detail for detail) those of the Magic Leap 1 Creator Edition (revealed in December of 2017).

Controller (late-2019) Specs:

• Haptics: LRA Haptic Device

• Touchpad: Touch sensitive

SEE TOO: Today's Magic Leap failure should teach us this one lesson

In the approximately $3k package, the Magic Leap 1 Enterprise Suite includes the following items:

• Magic Leap 1, an updated version of Magic Leap One Creator Edition

• Two-year access to dedicated omnichannel* support.

• Two-year access to Device Manager with enterprise-level support from Magic Leap

• Two-year access to a RapidReplace program

• Two-year extended warranty to guarantee Magic Leap 1 always works as it should**

*Omnichannel support here seems to mean Magic Leap will provide assistance to users for both hardware and software, both online and offline.

**This does not necessarily mean that the end-of-life point for Magic Leap 1 will be the tail end of 2021 – but it COULD indicate that there'll be another new Magic Leap headset by then. We shall see.

Magic Leap noted today that "global enterprises" such as NTT DOCOMO, Boston Consulting Group, BNP Paribas, Deloitte, Hyperloop TT, JetBlue Travel, McLaren, and Skender have all "committed to bringing spatial computing to their companies and customers."

The Magic Leap 1 headset can be purchased for $96 USD per month for 24 months – for a grand total of $2304 USD. Or you can purchase the headset on its own for $2295, or get a Developer Suite for $2495 USD.
