Looking For Group documentary relives 10 years of World of Warcraft

No, this isn't the much-awaited "Warcraft" film, of course, but it could very well be a stopgap filler while fans wait for almost two more years. At BlizzCon last weekend, fans celebrated the 10th anniversary of the now venerable MMORPG title World of Warcraft by watching a documentary that takes a look back at those years, both with fondness and perhaps even a bit of pain. "Looking For Group" takes a look behind and around the scenes, giving viewers a glimpse of the sub-culture that rose up around the MMO that started it all.

To be clear, MMORPGs have long been in existence even before WoW, especially in the East where such games are a dime a dozen. The US also had its own share, but none really took to the skies the way World of Warcraft did. It could, perhaps, be likened to the Dungeons & Dragons revolution that also started in the US and, like D&D, it got its own fair share of publicity, both good and bad.

Looking For Group tells it all, from the vantage point not only of players but also of developers and die-hard fans that flock to conventions bearing suits of armor or wearing almost nothing at all. From the beginnings of the game, with an unbelievable of development team of 20, through growth pains, through success and scandals, the documentary recounts the real-life adventure of the WoW community that could perhaps match the epicness of the virtual world itself. Even those not interested in WoW itself might be able to take a few things away from the story of building a virtual world.

The documentary was first shown to attendees of BlizzCon 2014 but is now available for all to see. Do get your popcorn and your most comfy watching chair ready, because Looking For Group will take up a total of an hour of your life.
