LG's new OLED display is transparent, flexible, and gigantic

Most of the time, discussion about display technologies will be limited mostly to their consumer applications. Every once in a while, though, a company will create a new display that isn't meant to be sold, but rather was created as a way of pushing display technology forward. LG Display is doing precisely that today, showing off a new massive, flexible OLED display.

The display that LG debuted today clocks in at a ridiculous 77-inches. If that isn't enough to wow you, there's also the fact that it boasts 40% transparency and UHD (3,840 x 2,160) resolution. Finally, LG says that this display can be rolled up to a radius of 80mm without harming its functionality.

It's definitely an impressive piece of display technology, but don't expect to see this exact display be mass produced any time soon. As it has done in the past, LG Display developed this more of a proof of concept, not necessarily as a consumer item. For now at least, the amount LG would need to charge for a display like this would be prohibitive for a lot of consumers.

This also serves as a good benchmark for LG's progress in improving display technology. It was just three years ago, in 2014, that LG rolled out two separate 18-inch OLED panels – one with 30 radius of curvature (this new one has 80 radius of curvature) and the other being flexible. Last year, LG showed off a 55-inch OLED panel sporting 40% transparency.

Even though we likely won't be seeing LG offering TVs with a display like this anytime soon, the company's efforts in developing this could help in other consumer products, such as smartphones. In the meantime, though, expect LG Display to keep plugging away at creating impressive displays like this.
