LG Optimus G successor to score Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors

Way back in March, we saw benchmarks leak for the LG Optimus G successor, the oft-referred to Optimus G2. The benchmarks showed it running a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, something that just became official via an announcement by LG. With the new processor will come a nice boost in battery life and quite a bit of performance.

In case you missed it, we benchmarked the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 earlier this week and liked what we saw (to understate it). This latest series offers a 75-percent performance boost over the Snapdragon S4 Pro, with aSMP architecture bringing along the spiked battery life numbers, among other things, and the Adreno 330 GPU more than doubling the Adreno 320's offerings.

With the Snapdragon 800, Ultra HD – about 4x the density of 1080p – becomes an across-the-board reality for playback, display, and video capturing, while display resolutions support will go up to 2,560 x 2,048 (Miracast at 1080p). And on the connectivity side of things, the 800 offers 4G LTE aggregation for fast speeds.

As for the next-gen Optimus G handset (there's some debate about it'll be named), we saw it leak back on May 10 in a couple images showing a nearly edge-to-edge display, with word having it the display will be 5-inches, though some other rumors have it pegged at the slightly larger 5.5-inches. It'll run Android Jelly Bean 4.2.

Said LG's President and CEO Dr. Jong-seok Park: "With a powerful combination of LG's core smartphone technologies and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, we are taking a significant step forward in the mobile experience. The result of this collaboration will in many ways be the industry's best smartphone by which all other devices will be measured."
