Land Rover Discovery SVX aims at off-road enthusiasts

Land Rover has unveiled a new off-roader at the Frankfurt Motor Show that it says is a preview of the ultimate all-terrain Land Rover Discovery. The Discovery SVX packs in a 5.0L supercharged V8 engine that makes 525PS or about 525hp. Land Rover says that this is the most extreme Land Rover yet and that the vehicle has go-anywhere capability thanks to increased ground clearance, body and suspension lifts, and more wheel articulation along with all-terrain tires.

This is the first time that a Discovery model has used a specially tuned Terrain Response 2 system and Active Roll Control. The Discovery SVX is the first Land Rover that is hand assembled at the SVO Technical Center with production starting in 2018. That big supercharged V8 also makes 625Nm of torque, or about 461 lb-ft of torque.

That Hydraulic Active Roll Control feature is (H-ARC) and provides increased wheel articulation and improved body control for better traction off-road. It also helps reduce body roll for better handling on the road. The Discovery SVX has improved approach, departure, and breakover angles thanks to a raised aluminum monocoque structure and a four corner air suspension system with long-travel dampers.

The SVX rides on larger 815 mm diameter 275/55 R20 Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires. The vehicle has active center and electronic rear locking differentials. Land Rover also gave the Discovery SVX special calibration for the 8-speed automatic transmission and twin-speed transfer box.

The SVX being shown in Germany is a pre-production version. There is no word on final availability or if the vehicle will be offered in the US. Being hand-made at SVO likely means a very high price tag.
