Komani shows off Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain with open-world gameplay

We knew Konami would be making an appearance at E3 this year, and Microsoft's press conference started off right away with a first-look trailer of the game developer's latest game, which just so happens to be a new Metal Gear Solid. Konami announced Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Snake is back in this one, and it seems the game will take place in the middle east. One of the biggest changes to this new title is the addition of open-world gameplay. MGSV will feature a sandbox-like experience that will allow players to run around wherever and whenever they want, even on horseback (just like in Red Dead Redemption).

In the game, we see Snake sneaking around in bushes, and slowly coming up on guards to disable them. There's also plenty of crawling on the growd, and of course guns. Characters include Kazuhira Miller, who Snake saves. Snake is introduced in the trailer as "Punished Snake," so we should be seeing something different from them in this new game.

The open-world gameplay of MGSV should bring a lasting appeal to the title when it eventually releases. No date was mentioned, but we're guessing that we'll see it later this fall alongside the Xbox One release. Aside from horseback, you'll be able to drive army vehicles and the like. Looks like a ton of fun from what we saw.
