Kindle Voyage is its most advanced ereader, says Amazon

Though most of the products introduced by Amazon today fall into the tablet category, the Internet retailer has also unveiled a proper ereader, the Kindle Voyage. Amazon is hailing the Voyage as its "most advanced" ereader, and joining it is the less expensive new Kindle with touch functionality.

The Kindle Voyage features a new design amongst the company's ereaders, featuring a glass front and back plate made of magnesium. The entire device measures in at 7.6mm, and weighs in at 6.4 ounces. This makes the Voyage Amazon's thinnest device yet.

Amongst all the Kindles, the Voyage has the highest resolution, brightness, and contrast thanks to a new Paperwhite display (300ppi) — Amazon promises this new display gives "laser-quality" images and text. There's strengthened glass with scratch resistance.

The new light used with the Kindle Voyage includes automatic brightness adjustment based on ambient light levels, slowly dimming or increasing to avoid drastic changes. Also included with the new ereader is PagePress, something Amazon says is a new way to flip through digital pages.

PagePress works with sensors under the bezel, which allows the user to place their thumb over the bezel and give a small press to flip the page. There's haptic feedback in the form of a vibration. There free 3G, and an optional Origami Cover.

Joining the Voyage is the new Kindle, which is said to be 20-percent faster than the previous generation and includes touch support. The new Kindle is priced at $79 USD, while the Voyage is priced at $199 USD. Both can be pre-ordered now, and won't start shipping until some time next month. The new Kindle Paperwhite, meanwhile, is priced at $119 USD, and features double the storage capacity.
