iPhone 6 GPU slightly better than 5S in benchmark test

The iPhone 5S was a pretty marked improvement over what came ahead of it (speaking strictly of iPhones, of course), but the newest iPhone may not be such an improvement. the first benchmarks are reportedly in, and the iPhone 6's A8 processor might not be much more of a powerhouse than the A7. Still incrementally better, we now learn why Apple wasn't making a big deal about the A8 at their product announcement soirée last week.

We'll take a minute to provide a touch of levity to these findings. The benchmarks concentrate on GPU performance, and while that's important — it's not the full picture. Apple also isn't saying what GPU is in their A8 processor, but it's likely the lineal champion to the one found on the A7, a PowerVR G6430.

Scoring a 21,204, the iPhone 6 ekes out a marginal edge on the iPhone 5S' A7 processor, which scored a 20,253. That's a massive uptick from the iPhone 5, which scored a 10,973 on the same test, and wildly better than the 5,034 mark the iPhone 4S left on this test.

For the sake of comparison, the Adreno 330 found on the Lumia 1520 scored a 25,346, which is best-of-show for the Basemark X test. The same GPU found on the Sony Xperia Z2 scored a 25,174 — best for any Android device.

What we don't know is what the overall score is for the iPhone 6, as a full test hasn't yet been done. It should also be noted that Metal, Apple's software answer for better gaming performance, likely didn't take effect here.
