iPhone 4 orders cancelled by AT&T and Apple for the second time?

The iPhone 4 launch headache continues, with a second batch of supposedly cancelled handset orders.  After reports last week that AT&T had sent out emails telling iPhone 4 buyers that their orders had been declined – which the carrier explained as "balancing" out those who had accidentally double-ordered as the stock systems went into meltdown – both Gizmodo and Engadget have been inundated by another wave of messages from both AT&T and Apple saying they were "unable to complete the authorization process for your iPhone order" and that "as a result, we had to cancel your iPhone order."AT&T email:

Your iPhone order has been cancelled.

Your credit card has not been charged.

If you believe you have received this email in error, please return to the AT&T store where you placed your order.

Sincerely,

AT&T

Apple email:

Dear Customer,

We were unable to complete the authorization process for your iPhone

order. As a result, we had to cancel your iPhone order. To complete the

purchase of your iPhone, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an AT&T

company-owned retail store.

To locate an Apple Retail Store near you, please visit XYZ.

We apologize for this inconvenience.

Sincerely,

Apple Online Store Team

Other preorder customers have simply seen their online order status change to "Cancelled" and have had no contact from either Apple or AT&T.  A representative from the carrier is claiming that this is, again, a sign that the two companies are going through the records and deleting what are believed to be accidental double-orders, but some of the customers affected have apparently only one iPhone 4 on pre-order.
