iPhone 11 vs Pro: What's the difference?

Apple has introduced three new iPhone models, the anticipated iPhone 11 and two new iPhone Pro models. The company showed off a large number of features, including many notable ones for its 'affordable' iPhone 11 model. If you're in the market for updating your aging handset, which choice is best for you? There are many important differences between the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro options.

The most obvious difference between the two devices, of course, is that the iPhone Pro is designed for consumers who need a higher-end device, particularly when it comes to camera performance and power. The iPhone 11 has a lower price starting at $699 USD compared to the iPhone 11 Pro's $999 USD starting price and the iPhone 11 Pro Max's $1,099 USD starting price.

The iPhone 11 features a 6.1" Liquid Retina Advanced LCD True Tone display alongside spatial audio with Dolby Atmos, the new A13 Bionic chip, dual-rear 12MP Wide and Ultra Wife cameras, a new wide-angle front camera with support for slow-motion capture, an IP68 water- and dust-resistant rating, and what Apple calls the 'toughest glass in a smartphone.'

The iPhone 11 brings a number of notable features, including faster Face ID, an extra hour of battery life compared to the iPhone XR model, Night Mode for improved low-light image quality, wireless charging support, spatial audio with Dolby Atmos, faster Gigabit LTE, and the Apple-designed U1 chip.

The iPhone Pro models differ in a number of ways, the most obvious being the triple-camera array on the back of the handset. Compared to the dual-camera module on the iPhone 11, the iPhone Pro's triple-camera module is designed for professionals, offering wide and ultra-wide shooting options with an incredible level of detail. The iPhone Pro features a stainless steel back covered with a single piece of glass, as well as different color options: Space Grey, Midnight Green, Gold, and Silver.

The iPhone 11 Pro is offered in two size options, the iPhone 11 Pro with 5.8-inch display, the iPhone 11 Pro Max with a 6.5-inch display. Unlike the LCD featured on the iPhone 11, the Pro sports an OLED Super Retina with 2 million to 1 contrast ratio, a huge 1,200 nits brightness, and 15-percent improved energy efficiency.

This model offers Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, also packing the A13 Bionic chip and, when compared to the iPhone XS, offering longer battery life: four extra hours with the iPhone 11 Pro and five extra hours for the iPhone Pro 11 Max.

In addition, and unlike the iPhone 11, the Pro model also features a 12MP telephoto lens with a 52mm focal length and OIS. Users get access to Deep Fusion, a new feature that uses machine learning for improved image quality.

Apple describes the technology as 'computational photography mad science,' explaining that it works by capturing four rapid and another four secondary images before the shutter is triggered. When the user finally shoots the image, a long exposure is captured and machine learning rapidly combines the batch of images to offer low levels of noise and high levels of detail.

The iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro will be available to preorder starting at 5AM PT / 8AM ET on Friday; shipments will start on September 20.
