iPad 3 with 4G LTE supported by new claim

Apple's next-gen iPad has generated plenty of speculation in the weeks leading up to its debut this Wednesday. One of the rumors was that the upcoming device might support 4G LTE, a claim that came from iMore, which, through an insider source, was the first to correctly pinpoint the March 7 date of Apple's iPad 3 event. That same source has now confirmed that 4G LTE will indeed be supported by the iPad 3.

Several reputable sources, including the Wall Street Journal, had reported that the iPad 3 would be getting 4G LTE support, but some reports seemed more doubtful. There was uncertainty as to whether 4G LTE would make the cut for the iPad 3 or if the feature would be introduced on the iPhone 5 later in October. However, with the strong carrier push for 4G LTE, it would seem unlikely that Apple would go almost a full year without it, especially now with the new LTE-compatible Qualcomm chipset.

The source did not go into detail as to whether the iPad 3 would be available with LTE support for both Verizon and AT&T at launch. It's also not clear if the LTE version would be launched internationally, since the network is most popular in the US. But even in the US, it is still developing with Verizon being furthest along.

Additionally, iMore says that it's still hearing that the iPad 3 will feature a quad-core processor. Other rumors include the use of a Retina-like display with a 2048 x 1536 resolution and improved cameras. For more details on iPad 3 speculation, check out our pre-announcement rundown.
