iOS 12 icon reveals new iPad design without notch, home button

A small icon spotted in iOS 12 beta 5 may reveal major design changes set to arrive with Apple's anticipated iPad Pro update. The existing models feature large bezels at the top and bottom, as well as the same home button found on other iPad models. The newly discovered icon, though, shows slim bezels on all sides, the elimination of the home button, and one surprising absence.

Rumor has it that Apple is planning an iPad Pro redesign that'll resemble the iPhone X, including slim bezels and the inclusion of Face ID. A small white on blue glyph found in the iOS 12 beta reveals a design that matches those rumors, with one big exception: the anticipated "notch" isn't present.

Also absent, of course, is the home button, which hints at the presence of Face ID. The image appears to confirm existing rumors, also revealing that the updated iPad Pro won't feature the notch present on the iPhone X. Rumors continue to claim that the upcoming iPhone models will contain the notch, however.

A similar leak in summer 2017 appeared in the HomePod firmware, which had revealed the existence of a face unlocking feature ultimately launched with the iPhone X. As for the new iPad design, Apple is expected to reveal the updated model this fall; the company, of course, has not commented on the icon's design.
