IO Hawk, the Segway-like mover you might actually want, is now available

Tired of walking around everywhere? The team behind the Segway thought you might be, but their design was awkward at best. the big handlebar rising up from the pedestal made you wonder if you were on some sort of odd scooter, which is counterintuitive when you're essentially standing still. The IO Hawk, fist unveiled at CES this year, is like a Segway, but ditches the weird handlebar, leaving you free to move about and balance a bit more naturally. For $1,800, it can be yours, too.

The IO Hawk is everything you'd expect it to be: water resistant, available worldwide, and without the big footprint of a Segway. It can also support up to 280 pounds, and takes about 3 hours to charge. It comes in black, red, and white, too.

Two independently moving footpads let you shift your feet for turns, and it moves about as fast as you might when at a normal walking pace, or about 6 miles per hour.

It's like a skateboard, except you're face-on with your path. There's also nothing to do but shift your feet gently to move around. For those who need to cover a lot of ground on foot, this might be more efficient than hoofing it. IO Hawk can go up to 12 miles on a single charge.

The first units began shipping on February 6, so if you're interested, it's currently available (no pre-order nonsense).
