Intel thrash AMD in Q2 2008 financial performance

The figures are out, and the winners in the ongoing silicon battle are Intel as rivals AMD post a net loss of $1.189 billion for Q2 2008.  While Intel have announced record second-quarter revenue of $9.5 billion, operating income of $2.3 billion and net income of $1.6 billion, AMD's Q2 2008 revenue from continuing operations was just $1.349 billion.

The bulk of AMD's troubles come from the scything off of its handheld and DTV product businesses, which accounted for $920 million of the net losses.  Overall, it was a seven-percent decrease from Q1 2008 performance, and a three percent increase on Q2 2007 performance.

Intel, meanwhile, managed an nine-percent increase in revenue year-over-year, and a massive increase in operating income of 67-percent year-over-year.  The company credits strong demand in all areas of business for the performance, which was at the top end of expectations.

AMD, meanwhile, are optimistic for Q3; they claim adoption of their current product line of processors and graphics cards is "strong", leading them to conclude that there is "increasing momentum across our businesses."
