IKEA's Sonos remote will be $14.99 in the US

IKEA has quietly added a US product page for its SYMFONISK remote, a handy – and inexpensive – controller for its Sonos-powered speakers, ahead of its expected launch next month. The gadget will give Sonos speaker owners a way to remotely control their music, without having to pull out a phone and load the Sonos app, or speak to an assistant like Amazon Alexa.

The remote first broke cover back in June, with IKEA pitching it as an accessory for the first two SYMFONISK speakers. There are two initial models in that range, a Bookshelf model priced at $99, and a Table Lamp version that at $179 includes both music and lighting.

Both are powered by Sonos' streaming technology, and can be integrated into a network of other Sonos speakers. However one thing IKEA wanted was a physical remote control, and the good news is that it's compatible with other Sonos speakers as well. Now, it has a release date and US pricing.

Tweakers spotted the French product page had gone live, and a little digging surfaces a hidden US product page for the SYMFONISK remote. That confirms that the accessory will be $14.99 in the US when it arrives on shelves.

It's not currently in stock in either store, or available to buy online. However Tweakers suggests that it will begin shipping on October 1 in Europe and the UK. There, it will be priced at 14.99 euro.

As products go, it's a straightforward one. You'll still want to have the Sonos app on-hand to pick playlists and organize different speakers into groups, but the SYMFONISK remote will bypass all that for the essentials. You can press it once to switch between play and pause, twice to skip to the next track, and three times to skip back a song. Turning the top of the Sound Remote controls the volume.

Both white and black versions of the remote will be offered, and they'll each come with a magnetic base and a wall bracket. For them to work properly, you'll need the IKEA TRADFRI gateway. That's priced at $35, and allows the remote to connect to both the SYMFONISK speakers as well as any other Sonos speakers you might have.

While a remote control may not sound like much to get excited about, it's something many Sonos owners have wanted for some time now. The company used to have standalone remotes, but they were expensive affairs sold separately, and discontinued back in 2012 as app control grew in preference and convenience.
