Huawei Honor 9 Lite at TENAA shows another 18:9 phone

You know that a trend is the new black when even mid-range phones from the East start sporting it. That definitely seems to be the case with Huawei sub-brand Honor, whose latest smartphones, including the Honor V10 and the most recent Honor 7X. And it isn't stopping there either. Spotted at TENAA is a new LLD-AL00 model that is believed to be the Honor 9 Lite due for unveiling next week. But that won't be it's only defining feature.

The 18:9 hype is catching on for two reasons. One is that it gives more space for content, at least on the vertical. Sideways, together with Android's split screen functionality, it has room for two square windows side by side. The second reason, though not always true, is that it usually squeezes out the bezels, making it near bezel-less design.

The Honor 9 Lite has both, based on this TENAA sighting. Ironically unlike the Honor 9 or even the Honor 9 Premium, the Lite version gets a 5.65-inch 2160x1080 "FHD+" 18:9 LCD screen. That said, it's pretty much still a mid-range phone, bearing a Kirin 659, 3 or 4 GB of RAM, and 32 or 64 GB of storage. It will thankfully come with Android 8.0 installed already.

More than the screen, however, the Honor 9 Lite will also have dual cameras back as well as front. And based on TENAA's listing, which contradicts previous leaks, both will have the same sensors. That is, a combination of a regular 13 megapixel RGB sensor and a 2 megapixel depth sensor.

The Honor 9 Lite is expected to be announced December 21. No word yet on whether Honor plans to make this available in the US at least.
