HTC Exodus 1s brings full bitcoin node support and hardware wallet

Following a teaser about it earlier this year, HTC has officially released its new Exodus 1s, a smartphone it claims can run a full Bitcoin node. The device is billed as a 'cryptophone,' one targeted at cryptocurrency enthusiasts who want to merge their favorite obsession with their handset. The model also features a hardware wallet that's isolated from the operating system for storing crypto coins.

The HTC Exodus 1s is, first and foremost, an Android smartphone with 4G LTE connectivity. Key to the device is its ability to run a full bitcoin node, according to the company, which is made possible in part by a 400GB microSD card. Joining that is the TEE, a hardware wallet that isolates the user's cryptocurrency coins from their OS and, therefore, from any malware issues.

As well, the device features a 'Web 3' browser and promises built-in security via the Zion Vault. Users have the option of signing into accounts and authorizing transactions with their fingerprint, which isn't unique to the device, plus they're able to verify their own crypto transactions rather than waiting for outside verification.

The cryptocurrency aspect aside, the HTC Exodus 1s features a 5.7-inch 18:9 display; it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 alongside 4GB of RAM and 64GB of integrated storage. The device features two 13-megapixel cameras, one on the front and the other on the back, as well as rear phase-detection autofocus, 4G LTE support, and a 3,000mAh battery.

The model will join the slightly larger Exodus 1; it'll launch first in Europe at €219, which is around $250. This is a solidly mid-tier phone that should be regarded as such; it's a fun model for crypto-enthusiasts, but buyers should manage their expectations. The company plans to sell it in other markets outside of Europe in the future, including the UAE and Taiwan, though it's unclear when the device will ultimately roll out in other countries at this time.
