How to get Mewtwo raid invites in Pokemon GO

Now that Mewtwo has been released into the wild in Pokemon GO, users around the world aim to collect their bounty. This is the first time in the game such a powerful Pokemon has been available, and the hype is certainly real. Pokemon trainers in major metropolitan areas around the world will be first to see this Pokemon, but all players should have a chance to engage with Mewtwo through EX Raid Pass invites.

Mewtwo is the most powerful Pokemon in Pokemon GO thus far. As such, trainers from all Pokemania backgrounds will want to at least attempt to battle him. There is only one way to catch a Mewtwo in Pokemon GO thus far – battling him in an EX Raid Boss Battle. The player must win the battle, then they must also be lucky enough to hit Mewtwo with a Pokeball that stays shut!

The EX Raid Pass - you need it

SEE: The most essential Mewtwo tip is dodging

Pokemon GO EX Raid invites are slightly different from Raid Passes attained at Pokemon GO Gyms. An EX Raid invite goes out to players that enter and win Raid Battles often. It would seem that all EX Raid passes are given out in under 48 hours after the player's last Raid Battle. If you're the sort of person to Raids every day, you're probably set to get an EX Raid pass soon.

There is no one special secret way to get a ton of EX Raid passes – only playing immense amounts in highly-trafficked areas. If there's a Pokemon Gym in your city you know sees a lot of action in Pokemon GO, go there. It'll be most likely to be chosen for the first wave of Mewtwo battles, and EX Raid passes will be pushed there before anywhere else.

Team Time

Mewtwo requires an EX Raid pass because he is the one and only (for now) EX-level Pokemon in the game. He cannot be beaten by one single trainer. Instead, trainers will need to gang up in a group of at LEAST 6 or 7 to have a chance of taking Mewtwo on and winning. That group must bring their best if they hope to beat the best Pokemon in the game – that means a bunch of Tyranitar!

Best Pokemon against Mewtwo

Other counters against Mewtwo include Houndoom, Lugia (legendary bird Pokemon), Snorlax, Scizor, Dragonite, Gyarados, Pinsir, Blissey, Gengar. Lugia will need Sky Attack, Houndoom needs to roll with Dark moves, Snorlax needs lick. Scisor is a big bug attacker, Dragonite needs an Outrage. Gyarados also needs dark moves and Pinser is a last resort – along with Blissey and Gengar (who is a glass cannon, always).

Above you'll see a video of one of the first EX Raid battles in the world. This is in Japan, and takes place after the initial Mewtwo release (limited event in Tokyo). This video shows a Mewtwo battle starting at around 30-minutes in – that's around halfway. Notice how much dodging is required to stay alive!
