Here's how to get Victini in Pokemon ORAS and XY

It's the first day of a new month, and if you happen to be a Pokemon Master who's been following along, that means there's a new mythical Pokemon available. In celebration of Pokemon's 20th anniversary, Nintendo has been giving away many of the series' hard-to-catch mythical Pokemon, giving players a new one each month. Here we'll tell you how to get Victini, the legendary pocket monster up for grabs in September.

To start, you're going to need a copy of Pokemon Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, X, or Y. You'll also need to be able to connect your 3DS to the internet through WiFi. Once you start up the game, you'll notice the main menu has four options: Continue, Mystery Gift, Live Competition, and Pokemon Link. Select the "Mystery Gift" option.

Doing so brings us to another menu (with a rather pleasant tune I might add) where we'll want to select the first option, which is "Receive Gift." On this next and final menu, you'll be selecting the second option, listed as "Get via Internet." Give your 3DS permission to connect to the internet and the rest plays out automatically – in a few moments, you'll get a prompt asking if you want to download Victini, and then you just have to watch as the Pokemon is sent to your game.

After you're actually in the game, free up a spot in your party and visit any Pokemon Center. Once you're there, you'll see a woman waiting by the counter, ready to give you your new Pokemon. Save the game and then you're all set – Victini is yours forever. Keep in mind that you'll only have until September 24 to download Victini, and mystery gifts are tracked by cartridge, not 3DS, so it's possible to download one Victini for every sixth generation Pokemon game you own.

As far as mythical Pokemon go, Victini is a relatively new addition to the roster. The dual-type psychic/fire Pokemon made its debut right before the original Black and White games launched on the Nintendo DS, kicking off Pokemon's fifth generation. The mythical Pokemon giveaway continues next month, when Nintendo will be sending out the dual-type water/fighting Keldeo, so mark those calendars.
