Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1975 USB TV receiver offers multi-format support

Hauppauge has introduced its latest television-centric product, the WinTV-HVR-1975, which is being sold on the consumer level as the HVR-1950 model. This USB TV receiver supports both Windows and Linux operating systems, and also supports multiple television formats, making it an applicable choice for those in both North America and Europe.

The HVR-1950 TV receiver is designed like a set-top box, but is USB based, and with it comes support for both NTSC and PAL formats, as well as ATSC HD and QAM digital cable television formats in the US. For those in Europe, in addition to PAL, there's also DVB-T, DVB-T2, and DVBC. With the device comes hardware-based video encoders.

All video, regardless of television format, is converted into MPEG-2, which Hauppauge says keeps CPU requirements for the accompanying computers lower. There are both 32-bit and 64-bit drivers for wider computer support, and for Linux users, driver support is provided under an NDA.

President of Hauppauge Ken Plotkin said, "Coupled with the support of NTSC, PAL, ATSC and DVB-T, the WinTV-HVR-1975 delivers a TV receiver which is as close to universal as possible ... We expect the WinTV-HVR-1975 to be used in Linux based systems for digital signage, sports equipment, hospital patient entertainment systems and other TV watching and high speed data delivery applications."
