It's no exaggeration to suggest that the Galaxy S8 is the most anticipated Android phone of the year. Samsung knows that well, and so is doing its level best to make the S8 and its bigger sibling, the Galaxy S8+, look the part ahead of the iPhone 8's arrival later in 2017. With a new "Infinity Display" design and promising Bixby virtual assistant, this is the phone Samsung thinks can eclipse its Cupertino rivals.

The S8 has a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED screen, while the S8+ steps that up to 6.2-inches. Both curve gently around both sides, framed with a narrow metal bezel. The same camera – with new software – from the ill-fated Note 7 is on the back, and a new, higher-resolution front-facing camera is on the front. Android 7.0 runs on either Samsung's own octa-core Exynos or Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835.

As for Bixby, the new virtual agent claims that it can do anything, by voice, that you could ordinarily do by tapping and swiping on the phone. That's in addition to visual search and contextually-suggested help in the new Bixby Home screen. Samsung Connect, meanwhile, turns the S8 and S8+ into a universal remote for your smart home, including SmartThings if you already have a hub or buy Samsung's new mesh-networking router with SmartThings baked-in.
