GT4 race car teams face a not-insignificant challenge. On the one hand, they need to go fast: very, very fast. At the same time, though, the rules stipulate that nothing major can be changed from the factory car. That means you need to tread very, very carefully.

For Mercedes-AMG, the answer is this: a new GT4 car based on the "regular" GT production coupe. It's no bad place to begin, of course, including the off-the-shelf biturbo 4.0-liter V8 engine. The race engineers massage it some, mind, and then pair it with a pneumatically operated, sequential six-speed competition gearbox.

It's not all down to the cars, mind. The drivers have an unexpected degree of control to change the setup of the vehicle while in the race, including various settings for the traction control and ABS.
