Formula E may be younger than Formula 1, but the electric race series is no less engaging. Celebrating its fifth anniversary in 2019, it has demonstrated that just because the drivetrains sound different, that doesn't mean fans won't get hooked. If they also change their minds on how they view electrification at the same time, all the better.

Teams – like Audi – have some tight restrictions within which they must operate. The FIA provides the same chassis, brakes, battery, and tires to each team. From that point, as in production EVs, the key is working on the best setup and software to maximize performance.

It's a strategic challenge, and one which can have direct impact on road-going electric vehicles. Just as F1 racing has proved to be a crucible for road technologies, so Formula E has already shared its benefits with production cars like the Audi e-tron SUV.
