As nameplates go, Ford's "Mach 1" may not have graced the trunk of every generation of Mustang, but that doesn't make it any less beloved among pony car enthusiasts. First used on the 1969 model year Mustang, the Mach 1 started out with a regular GT and gave it a performance upgrade. New suspension, new styling, bigger brakes, and that iconic matte black hood strip... all in the name of bridging the regular Mustang line and the significantly more expensive Shelby cars.

In the five decades that followed, the Mach 1 has been in and out of dealerships. Each time Ford used it, though, the core concept has been the same: attainable performance, a fastback body style, and a meaty V8 to play with. There's been no shortage of special editions in the Mustang's history, but it's for good reason that the Mach 1 is one of the most beloved.

Now, it's coming back again. The 2021 Mustang Mach 1 will pick up on that same core strategy, with upgrades to styling and performance, but hopefully without pushing it out of the reach of the enthusiast audience. Details are scant, but expect what Ford is calling its most track-capable 5.0-liter V8 Mustang ever.
