A new BMW 5 Series is a big deal, and so the 7th generation version of the car arrives with some fanfare. Bearing BMW’s new family nose for the 2021 model year, the 5 Series now looks sharper and more sculpted. Adaptive LED headlamps are standard.
The range kicks off with the 2.0-liter 2021 530i and 530i xDrive, and there’s a 3.0-liter inline-6 in the 2021 540i and 540i xDrive. More interesting are the 2021 530e and 530e xDrive, with a 181 hp 2.0-liter gas engine is paired with a 107 hp electric drive unit. At the top of the tree is the 2021 M550i xDrive, with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque.
Inside, there’s plenty of standard safety and driver-assistance tech, and even more of it on the options list. BMW’s transmission can borrow data from the cameras and the navigation to automatically adjust to suit the road and traffic conditions, and there’s 3D graphics showing all the other vehicles the 5 Series has spotted in nearby lanes. The new 2021 5 Series will go on sale in May 2020, and arrive in the US in July.
