Some nameplates are too good to give up on forever, and the BMW 8 Series is a great example of that. Not seen on a trunk lid since the last 8 Series was discontinued in 1999, it’s returning this year as the superlative luxury grand tourer. That means plenty of power, style, and luxury.
The design was previewed with the BMW Concept 8 Series last year, and has evolved into a production model with surprising ease. A long, shark-like hood and compact glass gives it a purposeful stance. Inside, it’s a 2+2, and there’s all the latest iDrive innovation.
Under the hood, the first engine will be a potent V8 engine, with 530 horsepower and 553 lb-ft. of torque, in the 2019 BMW M850i xDrive. BMW has paired it with an 8-speed Steptronic sport transmission. All-wheel drive is included, though the car is still rear-wheel biased. However, we’re expecting other versions to grace dealerships as the 8 Series range grows.
