How could you make the McLaren 570S better? One possibility is to chop the roof off it. That’s just what the British automaker has done with the 2018 McLaren 570S Spider, a drop-top version of the sports coupe.
Third bodystyle in the Sports Series line-up – following the 570GT – the 570S Spider has a retractable hard-top. That takes 15 seconds to open or close, and can be operated at up to 25 mph. McLaren claims that there’s no structural rigidity impact from losing the roof, and only a 101 pound weight increase over the 570S Coupe.
That means the 3.8-liter turbocharged V8 is more than enough to keep this car moving fast. 562 HP and 443 lb-ft. of torque add up to a 0-60 mph time of 3.1 seconds, not to mention a top speed of 204 mph. Compromise? If you open the roof, top speed drops to 196 mph.
