Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series revealed

What do The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Batman, and Guardians of the Galaxy have in common? Aside from being hit titles in the entertainment market, that is. As of today, all four of the above have a Telltale Game to their name. Or at least soon all four will. At The Game Awards, famed game makers Telltale Games and the comic book giant Marvel announced a collaboration that no one except them saw coming: a game based on a once obscure superhero team that has unexpectedly taken the box office by storm.

Telltale Games has made a name for itself for crafting games that eschewed button mashing and twitch reflexes for gripping storylines, memorable characters, and sometimes heart-wrenching scenarios. Although it was already on that road when The Wolf Among Us came out, Telltale was catapulted into the spotlight with The Walking Dead series. It would follow up that success with Game of Thrones, Minecraft: Story Mode, Borderlands, and, most recently, Batman.

Batman – The Telltale Series was already an unexpected surprise, considering how most games about the Dark Knight mostly involve violence. Telltale's spin was more like a psychological crime drama than action game. Despite the oddity of the mix, the game was received rather positively.

So Telltale proved it can pull off the unexpected, but Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy will definitely be an interesting challenge. Guardians mixes humor, drama, and action all in one unwilling hero package. And while Telltale has indeed touch one those elements separately in its previous games, it remains to be seen if it can similarly deliver it all in one title.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series is scheduled to premiere in 2017, though no date, not even a month, has been mentioned. The game will be delivered in five episodic installments and will be available on PCs, consoles, and mobile.
