Google wants US court to say Android isn't infringing on Rockstar Consortium patents

The Rockstar Consortium is a coalition of technology firms that hold a number of patents. The Rockstar group includes Microsoft, Apple, BlackBerry, Ericsson, and Sony. The Rockstar Consortium filed suit against Google and some of its partners over the Android operating system.

According to Rockstar, Android is infringing on several patents that it holds. The suits filed also include seven Android partners as well. The suit against Google and its partners was filed in the Eastern district of Texas, Marshall Division in October. The suit includes major Android partners such as Samsung and HTC.

The suit has to do with alleged infringement on seven patents. Google is claiming that its Android platform and the Nexus 5, 7, and 10 devices don't infringe on any of the seven patents in the suit. Google has asked the court for a declaration that Android and the Nexus devices specifically don't infringe patents held by Rockstar.

Google maintains that Rockstar is a company that has a team of engineers that have a singular purpose to look at successful devices on the market and see if they have any features that Rockstar might be able to use to get licensing fees from the maker. Google also claims that jurisdiction over the case should be in California. The courts in East Texas have a history of siding with patent holders.
