Google teases a mysterious GDC 2019 event

Even though our attention has mostly been on MWC 2019, which kicks off next week in Barcelona, Google is looking beyond that show and to the annual Games Developer Conference in March. Google has announced that it'll be hosting an event at GDC this year, sending out cryptic invitations to it and everything. That, of course, suggests that the company will be making a big announcement at the show.

The invite itself doesn't give much away. All it shows is a hallway with a lit room at the end of it before telling us all to "Gather around" and that "All will be revealed at the Google Keynote." It also gives us a date for the event – March 19, 2019 – but beyond that, we're left on our own to guess at what Google might be plotting.

There's at least a decent chance that Google will use its keynote to officially unveil Project Stream. Back in October, Google kicked off large-scale testing for Project Stream in an invite-only beta that stretched until the end of January. During that test, users were granted unlimited access to Assassin's Creed Odyssey, even getting to keep the game if they logged enough hours playing the during the test.

Project Stream is Google's attempt at the mythical game streaming service that has eluded a number of companies before it. Google isn't the only one working on game streaming either – Microsoft has its own Project xCloud in the works, while Sony has been offering game streaming to PC and PS4 through PlayStation Now for years.

Google, then, is going to have to bring out the big guns if it wants to compete with those two giants of the gaming industry. Obviously, Google hasn't confirmed that Project Stream will be the topic of the day, but it does seem likely considering this is a keynote address at a show for game developers. Regardless of what Google reveals, we'll be covering the event live as it happens starting at 10 AM Pacific/1 PM Eastern on March 19, so stay tuned for that.
