Google Open Automotive Alliance bringing Android to cars

Over the last several years, a number of automotive manufacturers and technology firms working in the vehicle market have started to bring their new tech to CES. CES 2014 is continuing that tradition and one of the biggest automotive related announcements of the show was made today. The Open Automotive Alliance (OAA) has gone official.

The OAA is a tie up between Google and a number of automotive and technology firms to bring Android to the automotive market. The companies working with Google in the OAA include Audi, GM, Hyundai, Honda, and NVIDIA. The OAA wants to accelerate automotive innovation with an approach that brings openness and customization to the market.

Google and its partners want to enable drivers and passengers to bring Android tablets and smartphones into their cars and control apps and music on those devices with the car's controls. Google and its partners are working to bring new types of integration to the automotive market.

Google also thinks that the OAA will allow developers to extend the Android app ecosystem in new and exciting ways. Google isn't stopping with its existing partners. Google plans to invite other auto and tech firms to the alliance to build a common platform to drive innovation in cars. Google also says that the tech will be coming to vehicles starting this year.
