Google Fiber adds Los Angeles, Chicago to potential cities list

Google has revealed that two of the largest cities so far have been added to the list of potential candidate location for its gigabit internet service, Google Fiber: Los Angeles and Chicago. Google says the two metropolitans are the largest they've begun talks with so far, and with the help of city officials the company will start its process to determine if Fiber can be rolled out there. There's already a number of other cities on Google's potential list, and unfortunately there's no timeframe for when Fiber might be rolled out in the populated hubs.

Google says it feels Los Angeles and Chicago would be a perfect fit for Fiber's high-speed internet due to their creative cultures and how they could benefit from higher bandwidth. This comes just over a month after Google said the cities of Oklahoma City, Tampa, and Jacksonville were being considered for Fiber rollout.

As of now Google Fiber is only available in three US cities: Austin, Texas; Provo, Utah; and Kansas City, Missouri. Six other locations are confirmed for Fiber installs: Atlanta, Georgia; San Antonio, Texas; Salt Lake City, Utah; Nashville, Tennessee; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina.

Google has previously targeted cities that are, or are quickly becoming, technology hubs. But with Los Angeles and Chicago having a combined population of over 6 million people, they could be some of the first to see people from a wide range of backgrounds benefit from Fiber's advancements.
