Google Chromecast 3rd-gen brings new design, multi-room audio

Joining its more exciting announcements today, Google has also taken the wraps off its latest and greatest Chromecast model. The third-generation version of its casting device sports a clean new look with a simple 'G' logo, though features and form factor largely remain the same. The company did slip a couple notable changes into the new model, though.

It has been a few years since Google's last Chromecast refresh, but the company is back with a slight upgrade. Despite the new smooth matte design and "G" logo, Google's third-generation Chromecast has the same puck shape as the previous version, as well as the flexible HDMI cable suitable for a variety of HDMI port locations.

The Chromecast 3 is a bit faster than the previous version — about 15-percent to be exact — and it supports streaming Full HD 1080p videos at 60fps. The new Chromecast will also get the ability to play music with other connected speakers paired with Google's smart gadgets, though that feature won't be available at launch.

The rest of the features remain unchanged from the previous version, though, making it a small refresh without anything particularly compelling. The latest model is now listed for sale on Google's online store for $35 USD.
