Google Camera app mod released with Astrophotography for Pixel 1, 2

Starting today, older Pixel devices will have access to a set of powers that, until now, were reserved only for the newest in the Pixel smartphone line, unofficially. While some of these next-gen features will make their way to the Pixel 3 family at some point, the Google Camera 7.2 mod app is a 3rd-party piece of work that'll bring new features to older Pixel devices right this minute. This includes such interesting oddities as Astro Mode for Pixel 1 and Pixel 2, as well as "Auto Timer" for a photobooth-like ability.

The collection of oddities to which your Pixel will be privy will include more new Pixel stuff than at any point in the past. Per the big XDA Developers post where the download(s) can be found, we've got a list of updates. Remember here that any downloads you do or don't do outside of SlashGear are your own responsibility!

Updated Google Camera 7.2.010 mod

• Enable Astro mode for Pixel 1 & 2

• Enable Focus options in Night Sight (Infinity/maybe just far)

• Modded lib for Learned Depth in Portrait Mode (Pixel 2)

• Enable Super Res Zoom while zoomed or in Night Sight (no zoom required)*

• Enable auto timer (photobooth)**

• Enable synthetic fill flash for Pixel 2

• Enable SFF in Camera mode for 3a

*Note that this feature is just like stock Pixel 3, so you won't find anything different in this particular area for the Pixel 3. This is a similar situation with a variety of the features in this app – some newer Pixel devices already had this stuff, so some stuff might seem like old hat.

**You'll find the Auto Timer in the app when the camera is flipped to the frontside lens. This is also known as the "Selfie Camera" if you've given in to that particular naming scheme. With said camera activated, it'll be found in Timer Options.

Most of the stuff you see above is going to make your Google Pixel 2 or Google Pixel 1 feel like a brand new piece of hardware. We've tested the app on the Pixel 2, and will be testing on Pixel 1 this afternoon. Stay tuned for more Pixel action!
