GM is bringing Alexa to millions of vehicles

GM has announced that it will be bringing owners of Chevy, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles from 2018 and up model years Alexa compatibility. Not all of the 2018 and newer cars, trucks, and SUVs will have compatible infotainment systems. Those that do will get the Alexa voice experience that leverages the Alexa Auto Software Development Kit. The upgrade will give the GM owners access to standard Alexa skills and capabilities.

GM also can create custom skills in the future that are relevant to the customer's vehicle. GM says that the Alexa experience will start to roll out in the first half of 2020. GM notes that the collaboration with Amazon is the broadest rollout of an embedded Alexa Auto experience to date and provides a tailored voice experience for properly equipped vehicles.

With the system installed, drivers will enjoy Alexa with simple voice commands while keeping their eyes on the road. The system allows drivers to check the news, control smart home devices, including lights and thermostats, and add items to shopping carts. Drivers will also be able to access thousands of Alexa skills.

GM says that it is delivering some Alexa features that will expand the in-vehicle experience in navigation, media, and calling. The navigation features will allow drivers to ask Alexa to get directions to a specific address or point of interest. Drivers will also be able to ask for nearby coffee shops and more. The ability to ask for a particular song, artist, genre, or station is integrated.

Drivers can also ask for podcasts and audiobooks to be played. Alexa can bring up available streaming services. On the calling front, drivers can ask Alexa to call friends and family via paired phones and Bluetooth.
