Garmin GPSMAP 64sc adds flash camera and 250k geocache locations

Garmin has updated its popular handheld GPS units with features to please the most discerning of adventurers, including an 8MP flash camera and a quarter of a million geocache locations. The flash camera is complemented with geotagging functionality, making it an easy matter to tag locations, find new destinations, and more. The handheld has also become a more attractive option for geocaching enthusiasts thanks to 250,000 preloaded geocache locations.

The Garmin GPSMAP 64sc is one of the more popular handheld GPS units, offering more durability and battery life than a smartphone, among other things, with the same level of portability. The unit features an IPX7 water-resistant rating, a 2.6-inch display that can be read in sunlight, and a quad helix antenna alongside a high-sensitivity GLONASS and GPS receiver.

According to Garmin, this model is designed to receive and maintain a GPS signal even if there's heavy cover or one is inside 'deep canyons.' There's a 3-axis tilt compensated electronic compass, a barometric altimeter, and an accelerometer.

The unit is compatible with BaseCamp and comes preloaded with a global basemap, as well as a year's subscription to BirdsEye Satellite Imagery, Garmin HuntView, and support for things like custom maps, TOPO maps, BlueChart g2 HD marine charts, City Navigator maps, and TOPO US 24K maps. This is all joined by 8GB of internal storage, which can itself be expanded with microSD cards.

Finally, there's that geocaching feature. Garmin says it has preloaded 250,000 geocaches on the new GPSMAP 64sc, all of which are derived from Geocaching.com. These locations include coordinates, difficulty in reaching, hints to find the items, descriptions of the caches, and ratings for the terrain. For those long trips, the unit's NiMH battery pack can be swapped out with regular AA batteries; there's up to 16 hours of run time on a charge.

The model is available now for $400 USD.
