First Command & Conquer Remastered gameplay footage surfaces

Just about a year ago, Electronic Arts made an announcement that surprised a lot of people, revealing that it had assembled a team to remaster the classic games Command & Conquer and Red Alert, along with their expansions. After that announcement, the company largely went silent about the games, but today, the team responsible for them has released our first glimpse at gameplay footage.

You can see that gameplay footage in the teaser embedded below. The trailer doesn't last very long, but as Jim Vessella notes in a blog post today, it answers the question of whether the remasters would be in 2D or 3D. Apparently, that's been one of the key questions fans have been asking since the remasters were revealed.

"We're ready to share the Remaster has been developed in the classic 2D visual style, unlocking our ability to stay as authentic as possible to the original games," Vessella said. He reminded readers that this is a remaster and not a remake, so changing things up so dramatically with a 3D art style wouldn't fit within the goals of this project.

Vessella also revealed that because Lemon Sky is taking a 2D approach to developing this remaster, players will be able to switch between legacy and remastered graphics in real-time during any of the campaign mission. Legacy assets from the original game clock in at a mere 320 x 200, while remastered assets are available in resolutions all the way up to 3840 x 2160.

You can see the difference between the two sets of assets (which Vessella notes are still a work in progress) in the video above, or you can check out the freshly-launched Command & Conquer Remastered website to take a closer look at the differences. We still don't have a release date for Command & Conquer Remastered, but hopefully one comes around the bend soon. We'll let you know when it does, so stay tuned.
