Fireball over northeastern U.S. skies was a meteor

A giant fireball that lit up skies across Northeastern U.S. states this weekend was a meteor, and it was captured by numerous cameras across multiple states. The fireball was much bigger than your average shooting star, lighting up the sky substantially in some places. The meteor was spotted in several states, including in Ohio, Virginia, Kentucky, parts of New England, and more.

Thanks to the growing number of dash cams on the road, the shooting star was caught on videos from several angles, some closer than others. The video below, recorded by Alexander Salvador in Falls Church, Virginia, captures one of the closer sightings. Others show the meteor from further distances, including one captured by a pilot flying a small plane at the time.

According to the American Meteor Society, there have been more than 670 reports of the sighting, most of them coming from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, with heavy numbers also coming in from Ohio, Maryland, and Washington DC. Interestingly enough, some reports came in from as far north as Toronto.

Of course, this is just one of many fireballs that have been captured on video. One was recently spotted passing over Western U.S. states, with NASA saying it was space junk burning up. Many such videos, though, come from Russia, where massive fireballs have been recorded, some so bright and powerful they have spurred conspiracy theories and caused injuries.
