Final Fantasy comes to Xbox Game Pass, Final Fantasy XIV promised

At its X019 event, Microsoft practically tried to steal Google's thunder just as the latter is about to launch its Stadia game streaming service. Not only did Microsoft confirm 50 games for Project xCloud, a stark contrast to Stadia's starting 12, it also revealed that xCloud will also dip its toes into the Xbox Game Pass subscription service. That opens the doors to dozens more game, including the newly announced arrival of most of the Final Fantasy series, with a big one still promised to come.

The Final Fantasy franchise has largely been associated with the PlayStation, with almost all of the titles after Final Fantasy VI launching primarily on Sony's gaming platform. It was only in the past few years that Square Enix expanded the games' reach to Windows and even mobile. Noticeably missing, however, was the Xbox One.

That changes next year with the addition of "classic" Final Fantasy titles to the Xbox Game Pass service. Don't be confused as none of these are what fans would consider the classic titles. Instead, these are almost all the Final Fantasy games, starting with the original Final Fantasy VII, including remastered and HD versions. Here's the full list:

- FINAL FANTASY VII

- FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered

- FINAL FANTASY IX

- FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster

- FINAL FANTASY XII THE ZODIAC AGE™

- FINAL FANTASY XIII

- FINAL FANTASY XIII-2

- LIGHTNING RETURNS™: FINAL FANTASY XIII

- FINAL FANTASY XV

One of the titles missing is the Final Fantasy XIV MMORPG. Xbox' Phil Spencer, however, promised that they are working on bringing it to the platform in the foreseeable future. After a disastrous launch, FF XIV reinvented itself and relaunched to better success on the PlayStation and Windows PC. Launching on the Xbox could help keep one of the few successful non-mobile MMORPGs from going extinct like most MMORPGs.
