Facebook Moments is being killed off next month

Facebook has announced that it'll be shutting down its Moments app next month. Facebook Moments was first launched way back in 2015, but since then, we haven't heard a whole lot from it. The app fell into relative obscurity – especially for an app made by one of the biggest companies around – until today, when Facebook confirmed that its days are numbered.

For those who need a refresher, Facebook Memories was essentially an app that allowed you to privately share photos with friends and family. This, in turn, made it a good tool for organizing and collecting everyone's photos from big events (like weddings or parties), but it seems that its usefulness never really translated into enduring popularity.

Indeed, Facebook told CNET in a statement today that it's shutting down Memories primarily because people aren't using it. With the end in sight, the company has set up a page on its website that allows users to export their photos from Memories to a variety of different places. CNET says that you'll be able to export your Memories photos until some point in May, despite the fact that the app is shutting down on February 25.

You have a couple of options when it comes exporting your photos from the doomed app. You can chose to create private albums of your photos on Facebook proper, with the company delivering a notification through Facebook when those albums are complete. Alternatively, you can create an archive of them and download them to any device you please – Facebook will send you an email when that archive is ready, and says you'll need to "download it within a few days."

Perhaps it's a good thing that Facebook is ending support for Moments – a quick glance at the Google Play listing for the app shows a number of recent reviews that praise the concept but complain about broken functionality. Are you sad to see Moments go, or are you one of many who are only just now remembering that it existed? Head down to the comments section and let us know.
