Facebook axes email service

Following confirmation earlier today that it recently hired former Ryan Seacrest Productions' worker Sibyl Goldman, the social network has ushered in another change, this one affecting (a small portion) of users: nixing its @Facebook.com email service. The change is due to low user interest in the offering.

The announcement was made today in the form of email notifications. Users have been receiving emails from Facebook advising them the social network's email offering is soon to be no more. Thus far, those who took advantage of the email address would receive incoming messages in their Messages.

With this change, the emails will be forwarded to the primary email address on one's Facebook account — assuming they have one in place. Facebook went on to explain why it has chosen to make this change, and it all boils down to a veritable lack of interest from the service's users.

Says Facebook in the email notification: "We're making this change because most people haven't been using their Facebook email addresses, and we wanted to make it easier to view all your emails in one place. Plus, we can focus on improving our mobile messaging experience for everyone."
